Understanding PGT

With the use of PGT, each embryo goes through one or more genetic tests before transfer, helping identify the healthiest embryo to place in the uterus. Choosing an embryo free of detected genetic or chromosomal abnormalities can improve the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy. It may also lower the risk of miscarriage, since many miscarriages are caused by chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo.

The PGT Process

Once your embryos have developed in our lab for 5-7 days, our embryologists take a small biopsy from each and send it to a specialized genetics lab for one or more of these tests:

  • PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy): Checks each embryo’s chromosomes and flags those with an abnormal number (aneuploid embryos). Choosing an embryo with a normal chromosome count may raise the chance of implantation and reduce miscarriage risk. This test can also reveal the embryo’s sex.
  • PGT-M (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders): Recommended for couples whose family history and genetic testing indicate a high chance of passing on a serious inherited disease.
  • PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements): Screens for structural chromosome problems that lead to abnormal embryos, which nearly always end in miscarriage.

Should I consider PGT?

The decision to use preimplantation genetic testing depends on several factors, such as your age, genetic history, health history, and test results. For many IVF patients, PGT can improve the odds of a successful pregnancy and lower the risk of miscarriage. Understanding which embryos are likely to result in miscarriage, or an abnormal pregnancy gives you more control over your treatment and your family’s health.

PGT FAQs

Embryos with an abnormal number of chromosomes often fail to implant, or implant and then miscarry. PGT-A helps identify embryos most likely to implant and develop normally, so transferring a single embryo has a better chance of working. This is especially valuable for patients over 35 and those with recurrent pregnancy loss, because it lets us transfer one healthy embryo with the highest chances of pregnancy and the lowest risk of miscarriage.

Research to date indicates the PGT biopsy doesn’t harm the embryo. Only a few cells are taken from the outer layer that later forms the placenta. The inner cell mass, which develops into the baby, is left untouched.

PGT-M may be recommended when intended parents have a high chance of passing on a serious genetic disease. If your family history or carrier screening points to elevated risk, we will connect you with a genetic counselor to talk through your options.
