Understanding recurrent pregnancy loss

Having more than one pregnancy loss before 20 weeks is defined as recurrent miscarriage, also called recurrent early pregnancy loss. Miscarriage is common and can have many causes, but that doesn’t lessen the grief of each loss. Our team is here to help look for possible causes and plan what comes next.

How We Evaluate and Treat Recurrent Miscarriage

We’ll start by meeting with you and testing for the most frequent causes of repeated pregnancy loss, which can include:

  • Genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in either partner
  • Uterine abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, scar tissue, or a uterine septum (a band of tissue dividing the uterus)
  • Hormone irregularities, such as low progesterone, which supports the uterine lining and the placenta
  • Medical conditions that haven’t been treated, such as thyroid disease, diabetes, or immune or clotting disorders
  • Lifestyle factors that may affect pregnancy

Most of this testing involves blood work or ultrasounds. Your care team will keep you updated throughout and will walk you through your options once results are in.

After reviewing your results, your physician will recommend the right approach for you, which may be a single treatment or a combination that addresses several underlying factors.

Treatment options may include:

  • Supplemental hormones
  • Hysteroscopic surgery to correct uterine abnormalities
  • IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to choose chromosomally normal embryos, if a chromosomal abnormality is identified
  • IVF with embryo genetic testing, which can be an effective option for unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss

Sometimes testing gives us clear answers, and sometimes it doesn’t, and both can feel hard. Whatever your test results show, we’ll be by your side through your next pregnancy, with close monitoring and support every step of the way.
